BIM is 3D? That’s only part of the truth!

BIM is 3D? That’s only part of the truth!
Manuel Kraus, Construction Management Consultant (CONTAKT GmbH)

While the traditional way of representing the project is geometrically, using rectangles, lines, hatches, etc., the building information model consists of countless digital objects that reflect the physical reality of the building.
For construction site planning, we need information about the building. This information can be found in plans, lists and, increasingly often, in models. Models have the following advantages:

First: models give us an overview and facilitate planning. Even if building information models contain a lot of information, filters and specific views help us to select exactly the elements we want to plan.

Second: we have access to information – and so do others! Properties and numerical information, such as the number of units, surface area or number of openings, are available at the push of a button. This makes it easier to realistically estimate the planned duration, while giving those carrying out the work a clear overview of the work package.

Third: information is stored where it can be easily retrieved, and the system is also used for recording feedback and documentation relating to the building. The date of completion, the number of man-hours and the equipment used are linked to the model. In other words, Sitelife provides real data from the construction site.

Model or Plan? – That’s not a question. BOTH will exist on a construction site, which is why Sitelife also works with PDF plans. Working with BIM is not a prerequisite.
